Holiday is a day set aside by custom or by law on which normal activities, especially business or work including school, are suspended or reduced.

Generally, holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance or a national event

Ghana has two holidays in January, one in March, two in April, two in May, one in July, one in August and one in September.

However, December is the only month in Ghana with three holidays. Public sector workers do not go to work on holidays unless their work is of an emergency nature.

Below are the three holidays in December.

#1. Farmers Day

This day is observed for Farmers. National Farmer’s Day is a statutory public holiday in Ghana observed on the first Friday of December.

However in election years, the Farmer’s Day celebration is held on the first Friday of November, though the first Friday in December remains a Statutory Public Holiday. It will be observed on 3rd December this year.

#2. Christmas Day

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration by billions of people around the world. It is observed by most Christians around the world.

#3. Boxing Day

This day is also observed a day after Christmas. Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated the day after Christmas Day, occurring on the second day of Christmastide. Though it originated as a holiday to give gifts to the poor, today Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday in Ghana. It is celebrated on 26th December each year.
